Generation No. 1

1. JOHN2 FUGATE/FUGIT (UNKNOWN1) was born Bet. 1735 - 1736 in King George County, Virginia, and died 1824 in Castlewood, Russell County, Virginia. He married SARAH Abt. 1755 in Virginia. She was died in Russell County, Virginia.

Notes for JOHN FUGATE/FUGIT:
John FUGIT/FUGATE was apparently not a son of Josias Fugit/Fugate who died there in 1757, his age doesn't fit the rest of the family. John was listed as "John Junior" in King George, Shenandoah, and Washington Co., VA, so his father may have been a John. But the John Senior could also have been another family member. John Fugate lived the last years of his life and died in Cottonwood, Virginia so researchers refer to him as "Cottonwood John." Several people have been proposed as possible fathers for John, but no actual linkage has been proven.

+++ John was a colonial soldier in the Virginia Militia
1 August 1757: A Muster Roll (Size roll), of Captain Robert Stewart's Company, in the Virginia Regiment, list a John Fewgit, Age: 21; Size: 5'8"; Country: Virginia; Trade: Planter; Enlistment: Draft, King George. ("Colonial Soldiers of the South," by Murtie June Clark, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1983)
20 June 1757: "The Court proceeded to prick down the several persons here after named as Vagrants, to wit: …John Fugate Junior., (and 19 others) . . . . (The court) ordered that the sheriffs . . . apprehend the before mentioned persons pricked down as aforesaid . . .cause them to appear Monday 27 June."
27 June 1757: 14 persons appeared in court. 8 were currently in service; 2 had been discharged; 1 had enlisted; 2 were draughted into service, and 1 was deemed unfit for service. John Fugit and 5 others failed to appear and were deemed deserters. (King George County, VA, Deed Books)

+++ From September 1763 to 1771: John and Sarah were in Frederick County on Gooney Run
Note: Gooney Run was about 5 miles south of Front Royal, Virginia (in the Northern tip)
3 September 1763: Survey (warrant Oct 1762): Land on Gooneys Run at the foot of the Blew Ridge for John Fugate Junior. ("Abstracts of Virginia's Northern Neck Warrants & Surveys" by Peggy Shomo. Vol II, Frederick County, VA, page 59)

October 1771: "…Land from John Fugate to John Cooksy. . ." A deed signed by John Fugate Junior and Sarah. (Shenandoah Co, VA court orders book 1772 - 1774 pages 3 and 8)

Note: A John Fugate is shown on the AIS (Accelerated Indexing Systems) as being on the Dunmore County rent rolls for the years 1774, 1775, 1776. But by checking the actual rent rolls the entries show that the rent was several years in "Arrears" This mean that the land had been abandoned, but was still carried on the county books. John Fugate was not actually living there.

+++ 1774: John and Sarah settled in Rich Valley in Washington County, VA
May 3, 1782: Survey for John Fugate, 51 acres of land lying in Rich Valley . . .(description of land. Same as below) . (by virtue of a Land Office Treasury Warrant # 10935)
August 30, 1782: Survey for John Fugate, 300 acres of land in Rich Valley. (by virtue of Certificate from Commissioners 3 May 1782. Commissioners certify that John Fugate, assignee of Benjamin Nicheson, is entitled to 300 acres of land in Washington County on Beaver Creek, a branch of North Fork Holstein River to include his improvements, he having proved he was entitled to same by actual settlement made in 1774.
1782, 1783, 1785, 1787, 1790 John Fugate (Father and son) on the Washington County, VA Tax lists.

21 Nov 1833: John's heirs sold the land at Castle Run. The deeds have the names of the children as parties to the sale. (Russel County Deed Books 9, p. 380 and 10, p 52)

Notes for SARAH: A descendant of Darby McCarty (of Shenandoah County) points out that Darby had a daughter, Sarah, born 3 July 1743, who could very easily be the wife of "Cottonwood" John. The two families were closely associated, and Sarah's brother, James is known to have married a Fugate. (The Fugate Family Newsletter VII, 1985)

He is on the 1830 Census for Decatur County, Indiana.
Fugit Township in Decatur County, Indiana got its name from John.
+++ "Decatur County, Indiana History" Edited by Lewis A. Harding, Bowen & Co., Pub., Indianapolis in 1915
The first settlers in that county: "Several families had settled within what is now Fugit Twp before the county of Decatur was organized in 1822. The county was carved out of the 'New Purchase' which had been bought from the Indians in the fall of 1818. Although the lands were not offered for sale at the Brookville land office until the fall of 1820, during the winter and spring of 1818, seven families . . . 'squatted' in what is now Fugit Twp. This was probably the first effort toward a permanent settlement in the new territory. . . . Who (the seven families) were, where they finally located, and whether they became permanent settlers in the county later on has not been determined. . . . It is taken by common consent that the Fugit family were the first real settlers in what is now the township bearing their name. . . . The Fugits entered no land and citizens of the township have never agreed as to the exact spot where the old Fugit cabin stood."
+++ "Atlas of Decatur County Indiana" Published by J. J. Beers Co., Chicago Illinois 1882.
(Book from Marion County Public Library, Indianapolis Indiana).
The Fugits: ". . . Spring of 1819, a movement was begun by these hardy pioneers to possess themselves of a part of the "New Purchase." First among them were John Fugit, Griffey Griffiths, and Elias Jarrett. In March of 1819, they smoked their last pipes among the hills and hollows of Franklin County, and with their families, settled as follows:
John Fugit, where the forks of the road now is, one mile east of where Clarksburg now stands; Griffey Griffiths, about a mile west of that village; and the Jarrett family near to the Fugits. These were all sturdy (western*) Virginia mountaineers, with large families".
"The Fugit family was one of considerable note in the early history of the country, and held several positions of trust and honor. The old father, John Fugit, was a Justice of the Peace in Franklin County before his removal to the "New Purchase," and brought his commission and docket with him. He acted as a Justice up to the time of the first Associate Judges of the Circuit Court. Judge Fugit was born in 1770 in Russell County, (in western*) Virginia, where he lived until after his marriage, when he moved to Floyd County, Kentucky. A short time afterwards -- about 1803 -- they moved to Hamilton County, Ohio **. In 1810 the family moved to Cedar Grove, Franklin County, (Indiana), where they resided until 1818. Because the Indians were hostile, they were compelled to seek safety at an old fort eight miles west of Brookville. They remained there until they moved to (Douglas) County. In 1825, they moved from their first location in Fugit Township, to what is now know as Turner's Corner in Clay Township. They resided there until 1839, when they moved to Milford, Indiana where (John) died in 1844."
"The Fugit family is noted as the tallest family ever residing in the county, the eleven averaging over six feet in height and all but one coming well up to that figure . The members of the Fugit family who came to the area in 1819 were the father, mother, six sons and three daughters(***). Four of them are now living as follows:
Mrs. Mary Garrison of (Fugit Township), Isaac W. Fugit, Esq. of St. Paul (****),
Mrs. Rachel McAllister of Windfall,Indiana, and Mrs Celia Wilson of Boone County, Indiana."
"Who were the first settlers of the county -- Fugits or Griffiths? The parties themselves agree to these facts: John Fugit, his son John, and daughter Mary (Mrs. Garrison, now of this city), then a young girl, first came out to hunt a location and put up a cabin. They were at work (building the cabin), but had not yet moved the family when Griffey Griffith came with his family. (The Griffiths were) the first family to make a settlement in the county."
* West Virginia was used in error in the book. It should have been the western part of Virginia.
** John took out a land grant from the Steubenville District land office 22 Sept 1806 for Section 12, Twp 15,
Range 4, in Hamilton County, Ohio. (The Fugate Family Newsletter X VII,1995)
*** It is possible that the writers forgot the oldest daughter, Sarah, who was married just as the family was
settling in the county and may have been unknown to many of their neighbors in the Milford Area.
**** The original text stated St Paul, Minnesota, but this is an error. He actually lived in St. Paul, Decatur County,
in Adams Twp., just north of Clay Twp where the Fugits lived

+++ The Fugate Family Newsletter , Vol XVII,1995
"Moses seems to have been one of the younger men listed among the heirs of John. He was born 1780/90 according to the 1830 census (of Bedford County, Tennessee). His name is not found on any of the tax lists in Russell county through 1803, and his first child was born in 1809, so he must have been born about 1785. We know he was still in Russel County in 1804, when he proved the will he had witnessed. Moses's wife was undoubtedly the "Nancy Fugit, age 64, b. VA" living with daughter Nancy and her husband John W. Bledsoe in 1850. He must have married in Virginia, as his oldest child, Frances, gave that state as her birthplace in later census'. The next record . . . of Moses is in 1812, when he purchased land in Bedford County, TN. He appears on the 1812 tax list for (Bedford) County. He sold that land in 1814, and in 1822 purchased another plot of 115 acres. Moses was dead by 1837, when some of his children sold their interest in his land to their brother-in-law, Moses Cheves."

+++ : "A SELF-MADE FAMILY TRADITION: James Monroe Fugate, 1832-1899"
The Fugate Family Newsletter for XVI, 1994 has an article.
"In previous articles we have learned of several family traditions that suggest the origins of the Fugates. Although there is a common thread running through many of them saying that the family came from France, there are no particulars as to when or how. In the family of James Monroe Fugate of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and California we find such a tradition. We must assume that James liked to tease about his "French origins." Someone -believing it to be true - even reported the information in the 1880 census. The family also entered it in the family Bible belonging to his son, Jesse B. Fugate. The bible says "James M. Fugate, born August 16, 1832 at sea, France." There is a picture of James's three children with their husband and wives with a note on the back that says: "Your cousin and partner. In center a real Frenchman." A descendant of James believes that this refers to Carrie's husband, who was French.

John's brother, William, was also in the Civil Was for the South.
In 1890 the Bentleys headed west, most of them to California . . . When (John Bentley) first got to Farmersville, CA he organized a Church of God and became its first pastor.

Notes for FRITZ LEONATE PALMQUIST: Letter from Roland Palmquist dated May 22, 1979: The family "left Salt Lake City in May of 1917. (Fritz Palmquist) was an attorney for the Wasatch Utah Mining Co., of which J.I. Kraft -- founder of Kraft Cheese Co. was major stockholder. (The Mining Co) bought property at Silver Plume Colorado and asked (Fritz) to come out and get it started, then asked him to run it, so he wrote and (the family) packed and left Salt Lake...and it took 10 days by Model T Ford to get to Colorado, due to mud, floods, etc. The twins, Florence and Ruth were not quite two years of age. One night (the family) stopped in the middle of the road and slept, (it) had one loaf of bread for 7 people for two days." In 1923 (Fritz) purchased a grocery store in Idaho Springs, which he lost in 1928. In 1929 (the family) moved to Denver. Melvin had a job with Swift and Co., eventually becoming Sales Manager, and so he purchased a house for the family to live in.

29. JOHN ROBERT HILPERT (NANCY CATHERINE6 BENTLEY, MAHALA5 FUGATE, JESSE BOLIN4, JOHN3
FUGATE/FUGIT, JOHN2, UNKNOWN1), b. 19 March 1884, Lamar, Barton, MO; d. 23 July 1959, Nevada City, Nevada City, California; m. MARIE LOUISE VESELY, 15 July 1909, Salt Lake City, Utah; b. 27 May 1889, Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska; d. 15 August 1966, Long Beach, Los Angeles, California.

Notes for JOHN ROBERT HILPERT: When John was nine years old and William was seven and they were put on the street, the brothers sold newspapers to earn money. People would give them Oats to eat and they would sleep in the park on benches -- covered with newspapers for warmth. John said that when he was 13 years old and had completed the 8th grade, he went to work in the gold mines (Wasatch Utah Mining Co) in Bountiful, Utah. He started as a "Mucker" (cleaning up the muck from the blast). He worked himself up to being the superintendent of the mine.
While John's dad lived with him and Marie they liked to play tricks on Carl Leonard. For instance, when his dad's long johns were hanging on the clothesline, John weighted them down and stretched them long enough to fit a 7' tall man and his father was only 5'2". One time Marie, to trick him, fixed Carl Leonard a huge bucket of oatmeal -- enough for two or three people. He grunted and groaned but he kept eating -- and he ate it all.
John and Marie moved to Keystone, Los Angeles County, California in 1920 to a small house on Grace street. In the early 1930s John rented a building on South Main and opened a grocery store. About five years later he bought property across the street, at 22022 S. Main, and build a bigger grocery store. In 1943 John turned the store over to his son Charles. In 1945 John and Marie bought 105 acres in Blue Tent, Nevada County, CA, for $5000. They moved there in March of 1946. (By the end of 1946 Charles had sold the grocery store and he and his family had also moved to Blue Tent.) About 1947 Bob and Evelyn (Hilpert) Lewis built a cabin on the property. In 1950 John and Marie divided about 65 of the 105 acres among the six children. John had been given only a short time to live when he and Marie moved to Blue Tent, but he put that aside and built a house and fences and hand-dug a 500 foot trench to bring water from a spring. He lived in the area for 13 years before his death.

Notes for MARIE LOUISE VESELY: In a Jan 13, 1981 Roland Palmquist tell of "Aunt Mary" kicking a rattlesnake into a stream when she found it curled up on the bridge.

Marie Hilpert founded the Keystone Women's Club. She led a group which brought Carson Elementary School to the Keystone area in 1928 and she served as the first president of the PTA. During the depression of the 1930s she helped provide food for the poor people living in Hooverville. When Marie and John moved onto 105 acres in Blue Tent, Nevada County, California in 1946 , it was like moving back in time to a more primitive era. They didn't have electricity for two years. Marie cooked on a wood stove and brought water in from the spring 500 feet from the house. It was a hard life, but they had fallen in love with the country. Six months after John's death in July 1959, MARIE sold the remaining 40 acres in Blue Tent (the other 65 acres had been divided among the children in 1950) and moved into her daughter, Evelyn's rental cabin on Willow Valley Rd, in Nevada City, CA. About 1963 Marie moved in with William, her son, in Long Beach. She lived there with William until her death in 1966.
